If you can only do one October Saturday, take the one before the 31st and book a dancer in Scottsdale for Halloween while the district is still in costume mode and the calendar isn’t a knife fight.
The 31st itself is a personality. Locals have kids’ stuff earlier, then adults later, or they skip the sidewalk entirely and host. Visitors treat it like New Year’s Eve with fake blood. Everything is louder. Rideshares take longer. Dinner that was bookable the week prior is a wait. You can still have a great night. You have to want that energy.
The weekend before is the better night for a lot of groups, and here’s why.
Same costumes, more room to breathe
Old Town is already in it. People are already dressing up. The weather is already that October thing everyone flew here for. You’re not inventing Halloween. You’re just not sharing it with every tourist who could only get off work on the 31st.
House rentals are still Halloween houses. Pumpkins on Southwest porches. String lights. A pool that’s still usable. You don’t need the actual date for the living room to feel like the month.

Bachelor crews who want Old Town without getting swallowed. Locals throwing a birthday that sits near Halloween but not on top of it. Girls’ nights. Divorce parties. Anyone who’d rather have a table than a story about how they couldn’t get in.
If your groom or your friend of honor is a “I want the circus” person, do the 31st. Ask them. Don’t guess. Mixed signals are how someone mutes the night they actually wanted.
Flights and houses
The 31st weekend fills first. That’s not a statistic I made up. It’s how October works in a town people visit on purpose. If you’re still shopping a villa the week of, you’re shopping leftovers. The weekend before often still has a headquarters that matches the guest list.
Friday landing, Saturday show, Sunday buffer. Same spine as any Scottsdale weekend. Just less desperate.
Don’t stack a dawn trail on that Saturday either. One outdoor block. Dinner. Short loop if you want it. Home. Costume hour in the living room.
What to tell us
That it’s Halloween-adjacent, not necessarily the 31st. That you want costume. That the address is a house, condo, or hotel. Headcount of adults 21 and over. A window after you’re actually home.
You approve who is coming before money moves. Then you stop tinkering. Changing the window three times is how you end up with nobody.
I’ve been doing this long enough to tell you the 31st is a show. The weekend before is a party you can still hear each other in. Both are valid. Only one of them fits most visiting crews.
Kids’ hours vs. adult hours, without being precious about it
The 31st in a residential pocket can still have porch traffic earlier. That’s fine. It’s also why I like the weekend before for a house show. You’re not competing with trick-or-treat foot traffic you didn’t plan for, and you’re not competing with every visitor who could only travel that Saturday.
If you insist on the 31st, host later, keep it inside, and don’t be the house with a speaker in the driveway while families are still walking the block. 21+ is the party. The street is not your venue.
How to pick between the two Saturdays
Look at flights first. Then the house. Then dinner. Then us. If any of those three are ugly on the 31st and clean the week prior, take the prior. Costume season in Scottsdale is a month. You are not missing Halloween. You’re missing a crowd.
If the guest of honor has their heart set on the actual date, do the actual date and keep the public part short. The living room is still the win. I would rather you keep the hour than collect a story about how packed it was.
What the 31st is still good for
If your people only get that Saturday off, you can still host. Eat earlier. Come home earlier. Keep extra guests out even harder. The house hour is the part you can still control when the district is a costume parade.
Take the group photo at home in light you own. Watch the sidewalk if you want. Then leave it. We don’t perform on the street. The after is a private party, and that’s the point of flying in or of living here and still bothering to plan.
Either date, tell us the real return time. A costume on a performer doesn’t fix a crew that’s still hunting a table at 11.
If both Saturdays are open, I would take the earlier one and sleep better. The 31st will still be Halloween on every porch in town. Your living room doesn’t need the date stamp to work.
Pack the same way you would for the 31st. Layer, walking shoes, ID in the pocket. The earlier Saturday is still a costume night in this town. It just isn’t a brawl for a table. That’s the whole reason I push people toward it when they have a choice.
